Restricting Calories For Weight Loss And Life Extension-Can You Extend Your Life By Decreasing Calories?

One of the diets and lifestyle choices that dwells on the fringe of acceptable practice is Calorie Restriction. This lifestyle choice isn’t for the faint of heart. Basically, you are talking about a lifetime of scarifice to maintain your weight and perhaps add some time to your lifespan.

What is Calorie Restriction and can you extend your life by decreasing calories?

Calorie Restriction, or CR, is the practice of consuming 30 to 50% less calories than a normal human of the same height and weight would need to maintain their current weight. Those that believe CR works are looking for not only a reduction in weight to an optimum level (in their mind), but also to add a large amount of time to their lifespan. They believe that by choosing CR as lifestyle, their body will run more efficiently by using less energy. Their body and organs will be used less, and therefore last longer.

Those that practice CR as a lifestyle do not maintain a 30 percent caloric deficit throughout their lifetime, as this would be impossible. It is believed that their metabolism is slowed down to the point that it is considerably lower than the average human, and their body can therefore survive with the calories that it is given.

There isn’t any proof that CR can increase the lifespan of humans, or for that matter, primates. Scientists have extended the lives of mice,worms and flies using CR, and tests on primates are ongoing. Unfortunately, with the current lifespan of the average human being, it will be quite some time before definitive proof can be given that you can extend your life by decreasing calories. In the meantime, those that practice Calorie Restriction continue on, hoping to add precious years to their life.

How many years can you add to your life?

Estimates vary, as hard evidence on the affect on humans doesn’t exist yet. Most scientists agree that a 3 to 10 year extension might be possible if someone were to practice CR throughout their adult life. Unfortunately, the majority of scientists believe the lower estimates are closer to the truth, and some think the 3 year figure might be high.

Everyone has to make their own choices and follow the path they believe to be best, but I am not convinced that Calorie Restriction is worth the sacrifice. I can’t imagine that a lifetime of depriving myself is worth an additional year or so to the end of my life.
